SET 2023 Analysis
This is a section wise analysis of the paper. If the paper is tough overall then the cut off remains low and for a simple paper the cut off goes high. Let's look at the various sections of the paper and analyze them individually.
Logical reasoning
First let us talk about the simplest questions from this category. The maximum number of questions, seven simple questions, were from the cause and effect category. There were five simple questions from the category of statement assumption and there were four simple questions each from statement conclusion, statement argument and syllogism. The one question about coding was also simple. That makes it 25 simple questions. The difficult questions were from probability, the series format, direction related questions and relations related questions. That makes it 5 difficult questions. That makes it a total of 25 simple questions and 5 tough questions. One can easily expect 25 marks in this section.
Legal reasoning
The section can be classified as moderately difficult but tending towards the tough side. The maximum number of questions i.e. 12 questions were from contracts which are often confusing. But to balance that were ten questions from Torts which are quite simple. The 4 IPC questions were expected and easy for those who prepared well. This will make a difference to the cut off. The minimum marks obtained in this section should be 15.
Analytical reasoning
This section saw all expected topics covered. There were 7 questions from bar diagram, venn diagram, tables and pie charts. There were 4 questions from math and three from verbal reasoning. Students with a good hand at maths would have found it easy and those who have a math phobia would have found it on the tougher side. The minimum marks obtained in this section should be at least 10
Reading comprehension
This is obvious that this section is simpler for those who have a good grasp of English language but the good part is that 25 questions were straight from the passage and hence manageable even for those who do not have a command over the language. Minimum marks in this section should be 25.
General Knowledge
The GK questions are make or break because nothing can be said about this section and the only way to prepare is the long route of updating yourself daily for one whole year. Even then there were just two questions from current affairs which is disheartening for most students. Minimum marks obtained in this section should be 10.
Overall score: 85
According to my analysis it is very easy to score 85 in this paper. This is my estimate keeping in mind if a candidate only answered the easy questions. My estimate of the cut off is 90. The following paragraph talks about cut offs in detail.

Admission process
- Scores of SET
The scores of the SET exam are helpful in short listing candidates who will then appear for a personal interview and a test which checks one's writing skills. The test which checks how good your writing skills are is called the writing ability test or WAT.
- WAT or writing assessment test
You will be given a few topics and you have to write a 800 word essay on any one topic. You will get one hour to complete the essay. An example of the topic is whether or not death penalty should be abolished.
- Personal Interview
Each interview lasts for an average of 5-7 minutes. You will have to hand over your file to them which contains your mark sheets and certificates of merit awarded by the school and certificates earned by participation in various events. Remain confident and coolly answer questions about your interests, strengths and weaknesses, your educational background and yourself and your family background and why you want to study law.
You could also be asked the meaning of legal terms which are commonly known and do not forget to brush up your knowledge of current affairs which will help you in the interview as well as the writing ability test. Staying confident is important and if you do not know the answer then accept it gracefully and do not argue when you know you are wrong.
Important thing to remember is that the PI and WAT score are counted as one and are together given 50% weightage while the remaining 50% weightage is given to the SET score.
